Gamma–Ray Emission from Active Galactic Nuclei – an Overview

Gamma-ray emission from AGN provides us with unprecedented insights into the physics of extragalactic jets. The emission from these jets fits naturally into the existing theoretical framework of relativistic jets as inferred from parsec scale and kiloparsec scale observations. Models of the γ-ray fluxes give us important knowledge of jet parameters, in particular magnetic fields and the size of...

Neutrino and cosmic-ray emission from multiple internal shocks in gamma-ray bursts.

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are short-lived, luminous explosions at cosmological distances, thought to originate from relativistic jets launched at the deaths of massive stars. They are among the prime candidates to produce the observed cosmic rays at the highest energies. Recent neutrino data have, however, started to constrain this possibility in the simplest models with only one emission zone. I...

Prompt Neutrino Emission from Gamma-Ray Bursts

Recent observations show that some or possibly all long-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) arise from the core collapse of massive stars. In this case, the GRB environments are believed to be preburst stellar winds. We here study prompt neutrino emission from reverse shocks as a result of the interaction of relativistic fireballs with their surrounding wind matter. We find that for reasonable par...

Isotopic Composition of Galactic Cosmic Ray Nuclei

Galactic cosmic rays represent a directly accessible sample of matter that originates outside the solar system, The elemental and isotopic composition of this sample of high-energy matter contains a record of nucleosynthesis in other regions of the galaxy, and of subsequent nuclear and electromagnetic interactions that have altered its composition. There have recently been significant new advan...

Transient X-ray emission from normal galactic nuclei

X-ray transients appeared in optically non-active galactic nuclei have been observed in recent years. The most popular model explaining this kind of phenomena is the conventional tidal disruption model. In this model, when a star moves within the tidal radius of a black hole, part of the star materials will fall into the black hole through an accretion disk, which gives rise to the luminous fla...
